Total Time 40 minutes
Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • 1 cup grated carrots
  • 1 cup applesauce unsweetened, no seeds or core
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup oat flour
  • 1/4 cup water if needed
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup rolled oats

Equipment

  • 1 Mixing bowl
  • 1 Grater or food processor
  • 1 Baking sheet
  • 1 Parchment paper
  • 1 Rolling Pin
  • 1 Cookie cutters
  • 1 Oven

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the grated carrots and applesauce, mixing well to ensure an even consistency.
  3. Add the whole wheat flour and oat flour to the carrot and applesauce mixture. Stir until combined.
  4. If the dough is too dry, gradually add water until the mixture reaches a soft but not sticky consistency.
  5. Beat the egg in a separate bowl and then add it to the dough, mixing thoroughly until everything is well incorporated.
  6. Fold in the rolled oats to add a delightful crunch to your treats.
  7. Lightly flour your surface and roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thick.
  8. Use cookie cutters to cut out fun shapes from the rolled dough and place them on your prepared baking sheet.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until the edges are golden and the treats are firm to the touch.
  10. Allow the treats to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Storage & Reheating:
Store the cooled treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week. For longer storage, keep them in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks, or freeze for up to 3 months. Always feed in moderation and consult your veterinarian if your dog has special dietary needs.
Variations:
- Add cinnamon for a hint of flavor (ensure it's within safe limits).
- Substitute the applesauce with mashed bananas for a different taste.
- Incorporate pumpkin puree instead of half of the applesauce for added nutrition.
